GM: Vehicle Validation Intern

(Almost all images are generic web pictures to avoid breach of NDA agreements)
(June 2015 - August 2015)

As an intern at General Motors I was part of the Vehicle Engineering Validation group, and specifically the Hardware-In-The-Loop (HIL) validation team. The role of our team was to set up testing environments on HIL test benches to validate the function of various vehicle features. These setups utilized a unique combination of dSPACE HIL simulators, MATLAB Simulink, Electronic Control Units (ECUs), and hardware components.

I specifically setup a HIL test bench to validate the Pedestrian Collision Mitigation (PCM) feature. This involved thoroughly learning the inner workings of the PCM feature, as well as collaborating with the validation test engineers to know exactly what tests would need to be performed.

With that knowledge, I developed a testing framework using Simulink and the dSPACE software suite (ControlDesk, ModelDesk, MotionDesk) to confirm the ECU CAN communication and function of the PCM feature. This included an easy-to-use GUI that could quickly switch between relevant scenarios.

Technical Development

The technical skills that I developed included:

  • Hardware-in-the-loop vehicle testing experience

  • dSpace software suite (ControlDesk, ModelDesk, MotionDesk)

  • Familiarity with Simulink

  • Programming in Python
